Namchi, meaning Sky High in bhutia, nestled among the hills at an elevation of around 5500ft., commands
panaromic view of the snow capped mountains and vast stretches of valley. It is also the headquarter of South district.
The area is fast developing into a tourist destination with its immense potential for all round tourist activities.
Namchi is approximately about 85 km from Siliguri. One can enjoy a joyous ride along the river Teesta on the way to Namchi from Siliguri by road, till Melli, from where one enters into Sikkim and South district. From Melli, one has to proceed towards Manpur where one has the option to go directly to Namchi via Kitam or take a detour to Jorethang and then proceed to Namchi from there.
Namchi is well connected with the rest of Sikkim through motorable roads. The Sikkim Nationalised Transport (SNT) buses plies regularly from Namchi to towns within the state and Siliguri. Private taxis are also available on regular basis for hire or on shared basis.
The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri Station in West Bengal about 90 kms from Namchi from where one can avail trains to different parts of the country and the nearest airport is Bagdogra in West Bengal about 95 kms from Namchi
which is a domestic airport and connected to the nearest international airport being Kolkata in West Bengal. |
